Première monographie de Pierre-Jean Giloux, la publication prolonge la tétralogie vidéo éponyme inspirée par le mouvement architectural utopiste japonais : le Métabolisme (1960-70).
Les films du cycle Invisible Cities sont des portraits de villes nipponnes, superposant des images filmées et photographiées de la réalité quotidienne, sociale et urbaine, à des images virtuelles.
L’ouvrage explore les liens qui relient quatre villes japonaises au riche passé architectural (Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kyoto). Ce voyage au sein de La Mégapole nippone retrace une histoire du Japon et s’achève avec la reconstitution de pavillons de l’Exposition universelle Osaka 70 et une proposition virtuelle de smart city sur les eaux du lac Biwa.
L’utopie métaboliste à laquelle il est constamment fait référence dans l’œuvre de Pierre Jean Giloux a joué un rôle déterminant dans la constitution de l’identité culturelle japonaise d’après-guerre et a eu une influence notoire sur de nombreux architectes contemporains.
Invisible Cities contient bon nombre d’images, photographies ou archives sur le projet, et rassemble un entretien avec l’artiste, des textes réflexifs, critiques et philosophiques des auteurs, chercheurs et architectes Elie During, Ingrid Luquet-Gad, Pierre Musso, Vincent Romany et Manuel Tardits.
Elie During, docteur en philosophie, enseignant à Paris Nanterre, à l’école des beaux-arts de Paris et à la European Graduate School.
Ingrid Luquet-Gad, critique d’art, membre de l’AICA , responsable de la rubrique arts plastiques aux Inrocks, a réalisé une entretien inédit avec l’artiste.
Pierre Musso, professeur émérite des sciences de l’information et de la communication à la faculté Rennes 2 et à Télécom Paris Tech.
Vincent Romagny, historien d’art et commissaire d’exposition, enseignant à l’Ensba de Lyon, Lauréat et résident à la Villa Kujoyama, Kyoto, en même temps que l’artiste.
Manuel Tardits, architecte au sein de l’agence Mikan de Yokohama, enseignant à l’université Meiji de Tokyo, a collaboré au développement des architectures de la smart city avec l’artiste.

Pierre-Jean Giloux’s first monograph, the publication extends the eponymous video tetralogy inspired by the Japanese utopian architectural movement: Metabolism (1960-70).
The films of the Invisible Cities cycle are portraits of Japanese cities, superimposing filmed and photographed images of everyday, social and urban reality, with virtual images.
The book explores the links that connect four Japanese cities with a rich architectural past (Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kyoto). This journey through Japan’s Megapolis traces the history of Japan and ends with the reconstruction of pavilions for the Osaka 70 Universal Exhibition and a virtual proposal for a smart city on the waters of Lake Biwa.
The metabolist utopia to which reference is constantly made in the work of Pierre Jean Giloux played a decisive role in the constitution of post-war Japanese cultural identity and had a notable influence on many contemporary architects.
Invisible Cities contains a good number of images, photographs or archives on the project, and gathers an interview with the artist, reflexive, critical and philosophical texts by authors, researchers and architects Elie During, Ingrid Luquet-Gad, Pierre Musso, Vincent Romany and Manuel Tardits.
Elie During, Ph.D. in Philosophy, teaches at Paris Nanterre, at the Paris School of Fine Arts and at the European Graduate School.
Ingrid Luquet-Gad, art critic, member of the AICA, in charge of the plastic arts section at the Inrocks. She conducted a unique interview with the artist.
Pierre Musso, Professor Emeritus of Information and Communication Sciences at Rennes 2 University and Telecom Paris Tech.
Vincent Romagny, art historian and exhibition curator, teaching at the Ensba in Lyon, Laureate and resident at Villa Kujoyama, Kyoto, at the same time as the artist.
Manuel Tardits, architect at the Mikan agency in Yokohama, professor at Meiji University in Tokyo. He collaborated on the development of the smart city architectures with the artist.
